Sun Protection Article: From Old to Young, Mountains to Sea

According the Skin Cancer Foundation, one severe sunburn as a child more than doubles the risk of skin cancer later in life. While this is a startling claim, the good news is that there now are many choices for sun protection beyond just applying sun block.

UPF clothing is now readily available and comes in the form of uv blocking swimsuits, rash guards (surf shirts), sun hats, sun glasses, stroller sun protectors, portable beach cabanas and more. These items can provide significantly more protection than normal clothing. For instance, compare the UPF 50+ rating of much of the clothing to a normal cotton tshirt, which has a UPF of 4 to 7. One of the reasons for the rapid market acceptance of these sun protection products, is that many kids think that the clothing is “cool” and fun to wear. Teenagers love to be hip and in style with “Rash Guard” surf shirts because they originated out of the surf industry and are favorites of surfers.

Many of the sun protection products are now going beyond swimsuits and rash guard swim shirts. Many outerwear products are now readily available such as uv blocking golf shirts, uv blocking hiking shirts, sun hats, and uv blocking wraps and sarongs. As awareness increases, so does the selection and availability of UPF products. So remember to “cover up” when spending time outdoors…now you have no excuse not to.
